Top Six Maintenance Mistakes
There’s a lot to remember when it comes to owning your own home. Taking care of maintenance before a problem arises is critical, but can be difficult to do on your own. Not to worry, the experts at THA Heating, Air, & Plumbing have seen it all, especially these six common – and hazardous – maintenance mistakes.
Not addressing water damage as soon as you see it.
Letting that dark spot on the ceiling turn into a dark patch may leave more than just an ugly blemish on the interior of your home. Water damage is serious and can turn into a much bigger problem for your home rapidly. Once a leak starts, it can quickly start to degrade the structures in your home. A big enough leak in the wrong place could lead to a dangerous situation for you and your family. If you see spots or rippling on your wall paint, notice water seeping from places it shouldn’t be, or hear dripping coming from places it hasn’t before, call us. It’s important to have a professional assess the damage to ensure all leaks are patched.
Not scheduling appliance maintenance as needed.
We’re all guilty of this. An appliance still works like new, why should I have to schedule routine maintenance? Why not just call a repairman once something breaks? Although this may appear logical at face value, you’ll save money and stress by scheduling routine maintenance. Parts require descaling, like water heaters and refrigerators, cleaning, or replacement. Take care of these needs and be sure your appliances will work whenever you need them.
Letting your faucet and shower heads build up mineral deposits.
Has your water pressure seemed to slowly drop over time? Try cleaning the faucet and shower heads in your home. It’s easier than it sounds! Just remove the head from the tap, and soak overnight in white vinegar to remove all deposits. Reattach the missing piece and your water pressure should be back to normal.
Using quick, easy, but harmful methods to hang artwork/wall fixtures.
Take the time to properly weigh, measure, and prepare your walls for hanging any fixtures. Using the wrong material, placing it in the wrong area, or overshooting how much weight your wall can bear are all mistakes that could leave you with a hole in your drywall. Don’t let this happen to you! Hang heavy objects on struts, use paint-friendly adhesive, and contact a professional if you’re unsure of anything.
Leaving your gutters to fill with leaves and debris.
We are always surprised to hear how many people let their gutters fill with leaves, without cleaning, for season after season. Debris build-up in gutters can lead to a myriad of issues. Prevent water damage by keeping rain flowing off your roof and away from your home.
Not filling gaps between tiling.
Make sure your grout is doing what it’s supposed to – blocking moisture from leaking between tiles! Make sure your bathrooms and kitchens are water-tight, and refill any spots where grout may have degraded or peeled away from tiling.
