All About Window Air Conditioning Units

Sharing is caring!

Does your home lack central air? Even if you have central air, are you having trouble cooling rooms on the upper floor of your home? A window air conditioning unit may be the solution for you. In today’s market, there are many different types of window units, fitting a wide range of needs. At THA Heating, Air, & Plumbing, we think it’s important to guarantee customers find the perfect fit to meet all of their needs, financial, environmental, and anything else. Here’s an easy to follow guide on purchasing a new, window air conditioning unit for your home.

BTU & Electricity

It’s important to understand all the numbers that make an air conditioning unit specific to a room or area. The most important figure to look at is the BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit. The BTU basically tells you how well the air conditioning unit will be able to cool a room, the higher the number, the better the cooling power for a large room. Sometimes, a high BTU is not the best choice for your room if you want to cool it effectively. If you have a small room, a high BTU unit will only be a waste, and cost you more in the long run.

Here’s a rundown of what BTU rating matches various room sizes:

100 to 400 sq. ft.: 5,000 to 8,000 BTU

400 to 600 sq. ft.: 8,000 to 12,000 BTU

600 to 1,200 sq. ft.: 12,000 to 18,500 BTU

1,200 to 1,600 sq. ft.: 18,500 to 25,000 BTU

As you can see, window units that are 5,000 to 8,000 BTU are adequate to cool most rooms in a typical home. Another thing that is important to consider: rooms receiving direct sunlight need a little more cooling power than rooms receiving a lot of shade.

Newer window air conditioning units come with a host of feature for you to consider when shopping. We listed some important features available in most, but not all, window air conditioning units.

  • Adjustable fan speed and temperature (cooling level). Some window units only have one cooling level, while some are non-cooling. Assess your and your family’s needs and make sure the unit you purchase is as capable as you require.
  • Timers save money and energy. When you’re able to program your window air conditioning unit to shut off at a certain time, you can make sure money and energy isn’t going to waste cooling an empty home. Set the timer to turn on just before people return from work and school for an air conditioned home upon arrival.
  • Feeling lazy? Get a remote! Many air conditioning units nowadays come with remotes to control the power, fan, and temperature level. You can do this all without getting off your chair!
  • Pay attention to your venting options. There are several different types of vents, some recycling air back into the room, and some forcing it outdoors.
  • Air filter and air filter alert system. Make sure your machine is blowing out clean, filtered air by cleaning and changing your air filter in a timely manner. Some units are equipped with an air filter alert system, turning on a light whenever the air filter is too dirty to be used. This also helps maintain machine efficiency and boosts longevity.
  • Shopping for a dehumidifier too? Look no further. Window units now have strong dehumidifying capabilities. Bundle two needs and solve your problem with just one purchase instead of several.
  • Sleep setting saves cash. A sleep setting keeps temperatures around the intended setting, yet raise incrementally in several hour periods throughout the night. This saves money and avoids wasting cool air on sleeping occupants.
  • Be aware of your outlet distance. If the outlet is pretty far from the window you intend on using, make sure your air conditioning unit is equipped with an extra long cord. Never, ever use an extension cord or power strip with a large electrical appliance like this.
